About Us
Chip Roberts and Bobby Perry were two local Charleston guys, fresh out of college from the University of South Carolina. They were still young and trying their best to dodge the real world. So in 1997 with the help of their families, they started The Kickin’ Chicken. They opened their first, and very humble location on Morrison Drive in the upper peninsula of Downtown Charleston. Their first years were trying but somewhat successful. After two years in “the neck” area, they took a chance and moved south. They found a spot in the heart of the King Street shopping district and close to the College of Charleston. The restaurant quickly became a favorite eatery and watering hole with the CofC student body and area businesses. From this location, the Kickin' Chicken was able to grow and flourish into what it is known as today...a casual, fun place to eat good food and drink some cold beer.
Since the beginning the focus has always been on serving quality food in a fun, and friendly atmosphere. Chip jokes, “Somehow we managed to survive the first few years, even though we really weren’t sure what we were doing!” A few years passed and along came David Miller, who partnered up with Chip & Bobby shortly after the two opened their outpost on James Island. Finally, with the much-needed guidance and knowledge that David brought, the trio were able to open and operate 4 more restaurants in the Charleston Area.
Over the years, The Kickin' Chicken has undergone significant transformations. We now proudly operate six locations in the area surrounding Charleston. David has since retired and Chip and Bobby welcomed longtime employees, Mike Muthard and Jamie Heron, on as partners in the business that they helped foster and grow.
The Kickin' Chicken continues to strive to do what we do best: serving up great food at a good value in a fun, inviting vibe for our Guests as well as our Staff. . We owe our gratitude for our success to our amazing employees, both past and present, and our loyal Guests. Our leadership crew, while different in many ways, is all about making every Guest visit special while simultaneously supporting our local community.
We want to give a big shout-out to everyone who's been part of our journey.. our Staff, our Guests, and the community. We couldn't have done it without you.
